What does Active Matrix mean?
Active-matrix is referred to a type of LCD. (see: Liquid Crystal Display) LCD's work by using Thin Film Transistors…or TFT. TFT's are very small switching transistors and capacitors placed on a glass matrix. To focus on a specific pixel, the target row is switched on, and a charge is sent down the proper column. While all other pixels are switched off, the pixel with the charge is the only one that receives the charge, thus lighting up.
Controlling the amount of voltage that the pixel receives will dictate the amount of light that the pixel will put out. Most displays today offer 256 levels of brightness for each pixel.
