What is Google adsense?

Adsense is a Google program that allows you to sell advertising on your website.  I'm not really sure what suit over at Google decided on choosing this name.  This name doesn't really do the product justice.  The name actually doesn't actually make... "sense"!  Adbanner may have been a better choice.  Anyone would be able to immediately know what this program is about.

Regardless, Adsense had become popular with content websites and bloggers.  If the website isn't selling anything, then Adsense is a great way to "monetize" your website.  First you sign up, and then you choose the type and size of ads you want on your website.  Copy your HTML code and apply it to your website.  Google will then fill in that space on your website with a color coded ad banner.  When someone clicks on your banner, Google will pay you a fee.  The amount of the fee will vary.

You may want to carefully consider whether you want someone else’s ad on your website.  Say you are selling generators.  If you place a Google Adsense banner on your site, Google will choose an ad that is relevant to the text on that site.  You will most likely see someone else’s “Generator” ad.  And that ad will be a direct link right to your competitor’s website!

Google adsense will give you the option to “opt out” of certain type of ads.  Be sure to block your competitor’s ads from showing up on YOUR website!   But Google does a good job of sending out their "spiders" to read the content on your site, and determine which ads will interest the visitors most.  Keep in mind that visitors will only click on ads that are relevant to what they originally search for, or what they are interest in currently...which is what brought them to your website in the first place.  Google will pay you for ads that people click on, not the ads that people will simply see.  If the visitor is not interested in the ad, they will not click it, thus missing your opportunity to see payment.

How Much Will I Make?

Well this will depend on a few factors.  Most obvious of course will be how many visitors will you be able to attract to your site?  If you are writing about a narrow subject and your website is a good authority on that subject, you will then get a better response.  Thus financing your brand new Audi!  But if you are choosing a popular subject that has many "takes" from other publishers, your site can easily get lost in the crowd.  Thus financing your new mp3 player.  And if the content on your site is NOT very clear on your subject, and gets sporadic traffic, then Google ads will finance a brand new Pentel mechanical pencil with 0.07mm lead...within a few months. 

My favorite part of Adsense is that it is absolutely free!  With no set up costs other than your time!  So why not give it a shot!  Google WANTS to use your site!  It will read your content and send you ads that will most likely be relevant to your visitor.  It will take into account of the visitor’s location, as well of his interests.  It may take a few months for Google to find that perfect type of ad that will benefit both themselves and you.  But the payoff can be HUGE!
