In Computing, What is an App (lication)?

What does "App" stand for?

An App (short for Application), is my software ticket program that I used on my computer to purchase baseball tickets for the next local game.  (web application)  An application (or App) is a collaboration of source code, configuration files, and API programs etc. ...that is if you ask a software developer.  Ask my daughter and an "app" is that noisy handheld game that my daughter spends way TOO much time on.  These smaller "App's" are easily installed onto Tablets and Smart Phones for your childs entertainment pleasure.  Ask my (trophy) wife, and she will tell you that an "App" is an awesome Mapping, Traffic & Navigation GPS application that gets her to the mall by navigating through traffic the fastest way possible!  So you see, it all depends on who this question is asked to.

An Application may be accessed via a network or locally.  An application is usually executable on its own without the use of any other software assistance.
