What is Blu-Ray (not Blue-Ray)?

Blu-Ray DVD (pronounced Blue Ray) is the next generation to DVDs.  It is an optical disk that was developed by the Blu-Ray Disk Association. (BDA)  This group comprises the world's leading manufactures of consumer electronics.  Some of the companies include but not limited to, Apple, Dell, Hitachi, HP, JVC, LG, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, Sharp, Sony, etc.  (you get the idea)

This format was developed for high-definition video (HD).  As well as storing very large amounts of data on a DVD size disk.  This format has the storage ability of more than 5 times of a regular DVD, and can store 25GB on a single-layer disc. And 50GB on a dual-layer disc.  This technology has the ability to record, store, and hold advanced video and audio programs giving the consumer an HD experience second to none these days.

Current optical DVD technology such as DVD's, DVD±R, DVD±RW, and DVD-RAM, use a red laser to read and write data.  The new Blu-Ray format uses a blue laser instead, which is where the name Blu-Ray came from.

Regardless of the color of the laser, Blu-Ray Drives have the ability to read and write onto CD's and DVD's.  (BD/DVD/CD drive).  Making the new Blu-Ray drives the only drive that you will need to work with ALL of the previous "red" laser versions as well.

The Blu-Ray laser (405nm) has a shorter wave length than a red laser (650nm), which gives the Blu-Ray the precision to laser spot data.  This allows your data to be packed together closer in the same 12 centimeter space as the DVD.  This is the secret of the Blu-Ray to store more data than it's earlier generation siblings. (the CD and DVD)

Many Hollywood Studios and other studios around the world are jumping on board with the new Blu-Ray discs.  You may have already seen this new format being released along with DVD of the same movie.   Blu-ray disc players are available from many manufacturers, including Panasonic, Pioneer, Samsung and Sony. Sony's Playstation 3 comes with the ability to play Blu-ray disc.  So go borrow your kids Playstation 3 and enjoy your favorite movies in Blu-Ray High Definition!
